Choice of family planning tools that don't make you fat

The myth circulates that certain types of birth control can make a woman's body become fat. But not to worry, because there are several choices of family planning tools that do not make fat for women. By knowing what these contraceptive devices are, you can prevent pregnancy while maintaining ideal body weight. Many people assume that birth control can increase appetite, thereby triggering weight gain. Actually, all types of contraception or birth control (including hormonal birth control) have not been proven to make the body fat or obese. The type of hormonal birth control that is currently used has been adjusted so that the dose does not have a significant effect on weight gain. Weight gain is actually caused by several factors, such as unhealthy lifestyles (for example, rarely exercise and often consume foods with high fat, sugar or high calorie content), increase age, or have certain health problems.

Various Types of contraception that Don't Make Fat

If the use of hormonal contraception makes you worry about weight gain, then the following types of contraception can be an option for you:

1. IUD

The IUD, or Intra-Uterine Device, also known as a spiral KB, is a T-shaped contraceptive and about 3 cm in size that is inserted into the uterus. There are two types of IUDs that are generally used, namely those that contain hormones or those that do not contain hormones. Non-normalized IUDs have copper coils around them and function as spermicides that can kill sperm. This type of contraception can be used for up to 10 years. While the IUD that contains hormones is equipped with the hormone progestin which functions to thicken mucus on the cervix and prevent fertilization in the uterus. Hormonal IUDs can be used for 3-5 years. IUD does not make the body experience weight gain. A small proportion of women who use hormonal IUDs may experience a slight increase in body weight, but the increase is not significant enough to make the body obese.

2. Spermicide

Spermicide is a type of contraception that functions to kill sperm cells. This birth control device is available in the form of creams, gels, or tablets that are inserted into the vagina before having sex. Some types of condoms are also coated with spermicide. However, this birth control device can cause allergies or irritation in some people. Symptoms can include pain, itching, or redness in the intimate organs when used in sexual intercourse.

3. Cervical stamp

Cervical cap is a contraceptive that is placed in the mouth of the uterus or cervix, so it closes the entrance of sperm to the uterus. This tool is made of flexible rubber. Cervical cap will work effectively to prevent pregnancy if used together with spermicide.

4. Diaphragm

Just like the cervical cap, diaphragm contraception is also placed in the mouth of the uterus and prevents the entry of sperm into the uterus. The difference between the two is the size of the diaphragm contraception that is larger than the cervical cap. Diaphragms are also more effectively used with spermicides. To make it more precise and effective in preventing pregnancy, these contraceptives can be installed by a midwife or doctor.

5. Condoms

Condoms are made of latex which functions to prevent sperm from entering the vagina and uterus. These contraceptives are available for men and women. In men, condoms are used when going to have sex. Meanwhile, a female condom can be inserted into the vagina at least eight hours before having sex. The various types of contraception mentioned above generally do not affect the body's hormones. Therefore, this type of contraception does not interfere with breastfeeding and does not affect weight gain. In addition to the above types of contraception, other contraceptives, such as hormonal birth control (for example birth control pills or birth control) and steady birth control, also do not cause significant weight gain. Some types of hormonal birth control can indeed make the weight of women who use it increase slightly. But health research so far has shown that weight gain is not significant for causing obesity. If you are still confused or hesitant to decide which type of birth control is the most suitable, you are advised to consult a doctor to get the best advice.
